Last racing of 2007 - GB trials, Walton Small boats and Quintin plum puddings
Congratulations to the 4 MAA girls who went to GB trials on Saturday (15th) Deborah Mallinson came 8th in Lightweight women, which is an excellent result (in a time of 20:08.71), Chloe Aitkin came 13th (20:31.08) and Ruth Sanders came 18th (20:48.65). George Menheneott came 16th in Open women (21:54.99) and elsewhere Tom Solesbury (ex MAA, now Molesey) came 11th in Open Mens pairs with Tom Parker of OBUBC.
Chris Guest car-topped his single to take part in the last open event of 2007, Walton Small Boats head, normally run on the Thames at Walton, but moved to Dorney due to strong stream. He won Mens S2 1x - coming 4th overall in his division (fastest sculler)
Plum puds - thanks Quintin
Many thanks to Quintin for the excellent organisation of this end of year event. 10 eights in total took to the water (6 MAA, 3 Quintin and 1 Cygnet) and in the traditional handicapping system where the 'slowest' crew starts first and other crews chase them down from the Pink Lodge to the Quintin flagpole. The MAA crews were:
Womens vets / novices, Intermediate Women, Senior Women, Novice men, Senior men, Veteran men - it was fantastic to see most of the club represented.
MAA managed to sweep all 3 prizes on offer (Intermediate women winning, with the Novice men a close 2nd, followed by the Veteran men (in Quintin-speak, the Bar-flies). In addition the MAA committee offered the unused MAA regatta pots to the first MAA crew past the line - the intermediate girls are pleased to have brought home both the first and last wins of 2007.
Huge thanks to Graham Lloyd for organising, marshalling and generally sorting it all out (not to mention sourcing all of those lovely Empachers out on show!) - plus an excellent supply of free food and a welcoming bar afterwards.
Scullers Head 2007
Again MAA had a good showing in this event, part of the series of Head races run over the Championship Course from Mortlake to Putney (4.25 miles). 13 scullers made it over the finish line, in categories as diverse as S1 women to Veteran G men, with Novices and Lightweights inbetween. Another win this year, from Tracey Corbett in Womens Vet B singles - well done Tracey!
Membership renewal
Members are advised that they need to fill in a renewal form (including up to date personal details) and submit it with their cheque for renewal before the end of January. Late payers will be penalised. For the first time you may pay your subscription via the BACS payment system, saving having to write a cheque. Details on the membership renewal form (on the membership page). Forms will be available in the hallway at the club house and should be returned as soon as possible in the New Year.
Bonfire party
Another successful bonfire night party was held at the club on Saturday 10th November. Thanks to Jim for organising the fireworks and Lynda and Nina for co-ordinating the helpers to ensure monies were taken, the bar was stocked and manned and food was prepared and served! Well done to everyone that helped.
Fours head win
Congratulations to Beks Edgar, Tasha Smith (stroke), Becs Curley, Sarah Scrace-Field, Flic Bertram who won the W S3 4+ pennant at the fours head in November.
AGM and committee elections
The new committee was elected and the subs for 2008 ratified by members at the AGM on 27th October. See the Contact us page for details of the committee and Membership page for full details of subscriptions, but the short answer is that the annual subscription has been held at £320 per year, but the traditional discount has been removed and replaced with a penalty scheme for non-payers.
Sculling camp
The intermediate, veteran and novice women enjoyed a late summer weekend at the Cygents bungalow up near Sheperton lock, they were visited by the beginners to finish the sculling portion of their learn to row course in style (only one capsize!). All members are welcome on this annual trip - it's a pleasant location and the water is beautifully calm.
New faces
Welcome to new coach Tim Bramfit who is going to lead the Mens squad this season. Tim is an old friend of MAA, having coached here briefly in 2004. Welcome also to the new faces who have joined squads from other clubs, we wish you all the best of luck racing in the red-white and black of MAA.
A Wedding
Congratulations to Vice Captain Sarah who married Simon Blackburn (formerly Quintin, Cygnet and First and Third Trinity, Cambridge) on August 25th 2007. The were married in the chapel of the House of Lords and celebrated with family and friends at the Old Deer Park Kew on Saturday and then in the Lawson Room at MAA on the Sunday.
Peterborough Regatta – 11/12 August 2007
The new Women's Senior 4 came near to winning a point on their first outing. On the Saturday they won their heat against a field of 12 competitiors and finished second in the final just 6 seconds behind Twickenham RC. And on Sunday they won a place in the final via the repechage and came joint third with Twickenham. A great result for the girls.

Our popular learn to row course starts on Tuesday 14 August. It is already full with a waiting list of potential attendees. Please do everything you can to welcome and support the potential new members. If you would like to assist (coxing, tank or ergo work, single sculling help) please contact Chris Drake for more details.
National Championships Regatta, Nottingham, July 20-22 2007

Full results below, but some highlights - Domination of womens lightweight events, winning four out of five events: golds in fours, pairs, doubles and singles and silver in quads. Molesey @ Chiswick Bridge regatta
While the senior squad went to Nottingham, the intermediate and novice groups were planning to go to Molesey in a variety of boats from sinlges to eights, men, women and veterans! Sadly the rain on Friday put paid to this with Molesey lock on red boards by Friday afternoon the regatta had to be cancelled for the first time in its 130 year history. So instead we held an impromptu mixed eights regatta here on the tideway, with members of each group in each boat and Adam and Catt coxing. 3 eights raced a series of 3 races cumulating in an overall win for crew C.
Kingston Regatta – 14 July 2007
The novices were out in force at this local regatta, which for it's 150th anniversary was offering fantastic 3 pint pots as prizes. The novice men were unlucky to miss out on another tight finish in the eight but the novice women were victorious in their coxed fours event. The girls beat City of Oxford RC by 1 1/4 lengths in a well rowed race, after a slow start they quickly gained ground and went into the lead looking the more powerful and technically proficient crew. See photo gallery for pic.
Henley Royal Regatta 2007
The mens squad prequalified 2 boats, a Wyfold four and a Thames cup eight. Other crews from the club (a second Wyfold four, a Rememenham Cup eight, two Princess Grace quads) were required to race qualifying races on Friday 29th June. The eight (a composite with Molesey) and four both failed to qualify (the eight very narrowly).
The regatta proper
The Thames cup eight drew Cincinati Junior in the first round and despite leading at the Barrier, lost by 2.25 lengths. The Wyfold four were unfortunate to draw the seeded London A crew and lost in a fast time. London A went on to be losing finalists.
Our two quads (the lightweight girls and a composite boat with TSS consisting of 2 of our single scullers Anna Townsend and Mel Sage) were unfortunate enough to draw each other in the first round. The heavier composite crew won this round and went on to be beaten by a Dutch crew in the Semi final.
Henley Womens Regatta wins – 22/24 June 2007
Congratulations to the Elite lightweight four and Deborah Mallinson in Senior lightweight singles. Deborah had put in commanding performances throughout her event to then win the final comfortably. The Lightweight four (Olive Power (steers), Tracy Corbett, Ingrid Hansen and Penny Ladkin) on the other hand were led by Reading Rowing club for much of the final, just pulling a good strong sprint finish to claim victory on the line by 2 feet. Commiserations to the 3 MAA crews who were the runners up in their events (Mel Sage, Elite Pair, Elite Lightweight Quad).
Record club entry for Henley Womens regatta (updated Sat 14:30 – race times below)
28 club members, competing at all levels and in all boat types from intermediate through senior, senior lightweight, elite lightweight and elite, in singles, doubles, pairs, fours, quads and eight. We have people competing for the first time, seasoned veterans of the event aiming to increase their medal haul and notably many people racing in a different discipline to previous years (former scullers doing sweep and sweeper in sculling boats). This shows both the breadth and depth of womens rowing at MAA this year, which comes down to a huge amount of effort and hours put in by the coaches, support groups and not least the althetes themselves.
Henley Womens Regatta is raced over 3 days starting on Friday 22nd June - Large events like intermediate eights start on the friday morning, with other events starting later in the weekend. Details of all crews first race times below, full details of the draw can be found on the HWR website.

Australian Masters in Penrith
Rolf Howard, at heart still an old MAABC member, recently competed in the Australian Masters on the Olympic course in Penrith. Rolf rowed in the first Vet 'J' 4+ (over 80 average age – Fisa at present stops at Vet 'I', 75) and Vet 'I' eights, winning gold in both events.
George wins a silver medal at World Cup in Linz
George Menheneott (sitting at 3) won a silver medal (behind the Germans and ahead of the Netherlands) in a tight final in womens eights.
Senior women win at Metropolitan – 02/03 June 2007
The Senior women continue their campaign towards Womens Henley with wins in S2 4- (the lightweight 4- of Olive, Tracy, Ingrid and Penny) and S1 pairs (Penny and Tracy on Saturday, Tash and Tracey on Sunday) on both days, plus S2 quads on Saturday (same crew as Wallingford).
Deborah Mallinson won S3 1x on Saturday and went to make the final of Elite Lightweight singles on Sunday. This made for an eventful Mortlake coloured final, as she joined Mel Sage and Anna Townsend. The medal went to Wallingford sculler Jen Goldsack but the MAA girls placed 2nd, 3rd and 4th (Mel, Deborah, Anna).
The intermediate women and Senior men were less sucessful against tough competition. Next MAA crews in competition are the Novice men at Peterborough Regatta next weekend.
George selected for GB womens eight
George Menheneott has been selected to represent Great Britain in the womens eight at the first World Cup regatta of the 2007 season, Linz (Austria). The regatta is held next weekend (1-3 June). We all wish her the best of luck and for more opportunities in the future. Does anyone want to comment about whether George is the first heavyweight female from the club to represent GB in a full senior event? Certainly the first in recent years.
Mel beats someone at Essen
Mel Sage (nee Court) was selected to race at Essen Regatta on the weekend of 19-20 May. Although not a full international event, this regatta has a high calibre of racers many from their national teams. Mel was very pleased with a 6th placing - beating one other sculler from the Netherlands.
Metropolitan Regatta 2-3 June 2007
Held at Dorney lake, the first big 2K regatta of the summer season, will see both the Senior squad and the intermediate women racing. Looking to test their form against other crews entering similar events at the Henley regattas, this is always a key fixture. Support is always welcome and an opportunity for the novice end of the club to come and see the 'big boys' race.
Coach for Henley Royal Regatta – 04/08 July 2007
It has been a tradition for a number of years for MAA members to visit HRR on the Wednesday - the day most likely to have a club crew racing (although in recent years with the womens events usually starting on the Friday, it is also very likely that you'll see some red, white and black action on that day too). Richard McEvoy has investigated getting a coach if you or a group would like to join in, please contact richard@maabc.com for more details - costs are likely to be £10-15 per person with the coach leaving the club around 9am on the Wednesday morning and leaving Henley around 9pm. If there is a club crew racing earlier we will do our best to get there earlier too.
Novice men have first win at Borne@Chiswick Bridge regatta – 12 May 2007
After a frustrating head season where every event they entered was cancelled, then going out in the first round last weekend at Chiswick the novice men picked up a non-qualifying pot against Cygnet in Open Novice coxed fours, they also powered through 2 heats in the eight before losing to Kings College Wimbledon by a mere 1/2 length in the eight.
The senior 2 coxless four also won, with racing from the novice girls, intemediate girls (first foray into regattas in coxless boats) and our sole junior, Alice.
Some old news...
Apologies for not putting this up sooner. George Menheneott was the sole representative of MAA at the GB final squal trials held in Hazewinkel (Belgium). She was racing in a pair with Louisa Reeve (Leander). They produced an outstanding result of 4th in the womens pairs A final, behind 3 pairings who were part of the womens eight in the 2006 season and ahead of 2 pairings of established squad members. The crew for the womens eight for the World Cup regattas has yet to be announced but George should be named in it. We all wish George all the best for her first international season.
Wins at Chiswick Regatta
Senior men add to the early season pot haul with two wins at S2 at Chiswick Regatta in a warm up for Wallingford.
Wins at Wallingford Regatta
First big multilane event of the 2007 summer season saw numerous MAA crews competing. Overcast and blustery conditions in the morning gave way to difficult choppy conditions (but a fast tail wind) in the afternoon.
The Senior girls won Elite coxless pairs, Senior 2 Quadruple Sculls, Senior 2 Double sculls and put in some excellent performances in other events.
The Intermediate girls won S4 eights and placed 2nd in S4 coxed fours, in their first taste of multilane racing.
The senior men put in some good performances in competitive S2 level racing - a step up from the 2006 season.
Two wins at Hammersmith Regatta
Well done to Deborah Mallinson for winning both her qualifying novice singles pot and a straight final in Senior 3 womens singles at Hammersmith Regatta on Saturday 28th April.
Training camps go well
The senior men, senior and intermediate women shared a training camp in Seville over Easter. Mostly the weather was clement and many miles were put in on this now familiar stretch of water. The novice men had their own home grown camp over 4 days - seeing them afloat in number of different combinations and cumulating a couple of races over the 'international course'.
Two wins at Hammersmith Women and Juniors head
The second of the Chiswick to Hammersmith warm up races for the main WeHoRR (on March 17th), this one run by members from AK rowing club.
One of the two Womens senior squad eights won the S2 pennant in a time of 11:51.9 (with the second crew a mere 10 seconds behind them). The intermediates won the S4 category (2nd win of the season) in a time of 12:40.9 after having a fantastic race. see wins page for crew details.
